BSD-2000/3D System Description

The BSD-2000/3D consists of four major subsystems:

  • RF power delivery subsystem.
  • Proprietary, thermistor-based, thermometry subsystem.
  • Computerized monitoring and control subsystem.
  • Applicator subsystem that includes an applicator and patient support system.
  • Various accessories, including a tissue equivalent QA lamp phantom that provides verification of the energy focus, pattern steering, and system operations.

Power Delivery Subsystem

  • Solid-state amplifier with 12-channel independent phase and amplitude adjustment capability.
  • Maximum power output of 0 to 500 watts per channel.
  • Phase accuracy within a 10 degree tolerance.
  • Computer automatically monitors and controls forward and reflected power, phase, and power on each channel.
  • Optimized treatment settings are calculated through the use of treatment planning software tools provided with the system.

Thermometry Subsystem

  • Non-perturbing, electromagnetically insensitive, temperature sensors with an accuracy of +0.2°C over a range of 25 to 52°C.
  • Automated positioning system allows the operator to map the sensor along the length of the catheter in order to determine the temperature profile.
  • Precise calibration capabilities - accurate to 0.05°C over a range of 0°C to 60°C.

Computer Control System

The entire BSD 2000/3D hyperthermia system is controlled by a PC that is interfaced to all system modules. A large, user-friendly LCD color monitor, keyboard and mouse create an ergonomic operating environment. The system includes a high-resolution color inkjet printer for instant hardcopy treatment reports. The system software incorporates a color Graphic User Interface, automatically guiding the operator through the set-up and treatment procedures and featuring menu-driven selection of treatment parameters.

Applicator Subsystem

The Sigma Eye is an elliptically shaped annular phased array applicator that is comprised of a clear plastic shell, 24 radiating dipoles, and a bolus membrane. The Sigma Eye provides improved comfort for patients. The twenty-four dipole antennas of the Sigma Eye maximize the 3D energy convergence at the targeted treatment location.

  • Advanced annular phased array principles create a central focusing of energy, which significantly overcomes the penetration losses of the energy radiated into the body.
  • Phased array applicators allow the operator to shape the heating pattern to the targeted treatment area and achieve selective power targeting at depth for treatment of deep tumors.

Solid State Generator

The BSD 500 microwave hyperthermia system is equipped with a 915 MHz power generator. The solid state generator has 8 channels which can be independently adjusted in phase and amplitude.
 

Up to 24 Interstitial Applicators

The 8 channel generator feeds into a 3 way power splitter allowing up to 24 applicators to be connected. Each antenna produces a radiant energy zone that can be arranged to shape a heat zone specific to the tumor.
 

Up to 400 watts

The system itself is portable, space efficient and produces up to 400 watts of microwave energy in a single channel mode and up to 60 watts per channel in the eight channel mode. A high resolution touch-screen display is used for treatment planning, setup and monitoring during the procedure.
 

Treats Recurrent Cancer

Superficial hyperthermia is used to non-invasively treat recurrent or progressive cancerous tumors located within a few centimeters of the surface of the body. Interstitial hyperthermia is used to treat recurrent or progressive cancerous tumors located below the skins surface.

The semi-rigid MA-251 microwave interstitial applicators can be inserted into 15.5 gauge (5 French) radiation implant catheters. The heating pattern is ellipsoidal and approximately 4.5 cm in length along the applicator shaft with heating to the applicator tip.

No Shielding Required

Output frequency of 915 MHz (ISM frequency, requires no RF shielded enclosure) 8 independent channels deliver 0 to 60 watts of power. The forward power of all 8 channels are monitored, controlled and displayed by the computer.
 

Synchronous or Asynchronous

The computer will monitor and display the reflected power for each channel. In the synchronous mode, all 8 channels are driven by the same signal.
 

Controlled Phase Offset

The asynchronous mode allows each channel to be driven by independent sources. The power balance and phase offset of each channel is software controlled using the touch screen monitor.
 

Channel Multiplexer

All eight channels can be multiplexed into a single output channel of 0 to 400 watts under computer control. The forward and reflected power from each of the 8 channels are summed together and displayed as total power.

Four Sensors

Four sensors are provided with the basic system. The interface accepts up to 8 sensors. A typical treatment set-up would utilize 12 to 15 ports for the microwave interstitial applicators and 1 to 4 ports for connections to the temperature sensors.
 

Non-Mettalic Leads

Temperatures are displayed with resolution of 0.1 °C. - CK Inherently stable thermistor type sensors with non-metallic leads. These sensors are not perturbed by the microwave fields generated in the BSD500 system.
 

Fits 15.5ga Catheter

The sensor diameter is approximately 1.1 mm and is located at the end of a 33 cm (13 in.) sealed high resistive lead.
 

Low Leakage

An extension cable is provided with a length approximately 2.1 m (7ft). Leakage currents are guaranteed to be less than 15 micro amps for any type of failure.

Treatment Planning Software

Performing interstitial hyperthermia requires the use for the BSD-500 built-in treatment planning program. Using this software, the size and shape of the tumor can be traced on a grid on the computers screen. Treatment plans can ten be made by simulating the placement of antennae in and around the tumor. The power and phase of each channel can be set and adjusted on the screen. Each change in placement, power or phase will display the new simulated heating pattern.  Watch Demo
